Last week I talked about how different hair types are determined. Now I’ll examine each hair type more closely, offering advice on which Mane ‘n Tail product best matches up.
We’ll start with Type 1, which is completely straight hair – no curl or wave. Think of Cher – she is a classic Type 1. Her hair has that beautiful sheen to it and in the right light, it’s so glossy it shines. This is partly due to the fact that Type 1 hair is so straight that the strands catch light and reflect it back without any interruption from curl or waves.
Type 1 hair can also be on the oily side. Attached to our hair follicles are sebaceous glands and secreted from these glands is an oily substance called sebum. In Type 1 hair there are no waves or curls to catch the oil so it’s easier for the hair to be coated with the sebum, which also adds to the sheen. “Straighter hair is shinier,” explains Heather Brannon, MD, “because sebum from the sebaceous gland can travel down the hair more easily.”
How thick is your hair?
Type 1 hair is further divided up into 3 subcategories – a, b & c – which refer to the thickness of the strands. So how thick is your straight hair? To help determine this, haircarehints.com instructs that you take a shower and allow your hair to dry naturally, without any products or styling. Once your hair is dry, examine the strands. “Is it absolutely flat and straight? You’re a 1a. If there’s a little bit of body to it but no discernible wave, 1b; two or three slight waves but still straight overall, 1c.”
Whatever the thickness of your strands, it’s important to find the right shampoo, conditioner and styling products for your hair and scalp. Since Type 1’s can be on the oily side, you don’t need a lot of moisture to clean or style your hair. Because of this, we recommend Mane ‘n Tail’s Gentle Clarifying Shampoo and our Gentle Replenishing Conditioner. The shampoo gently cleans your scalp without tripping your hair. The conditioner is a weightless conditioner that provides hair with just enough moisturizing benefits to detangle without buildup.
When it comes to styling, you might have to get creative. If you’re looking to jazz up your straight hair, Fiorella Valdesolo with Glamour Magazine suggests bangs for a long term look and curls for short term do. Bangs will frame your face, especially when you wear your hair down and can even make your hair look thicker. “For stay-put curls, ” she advises, “comb a texturizing product into wet hair for grip, then rough blow-dry.” For this, we recommend Mane ‘n Tail’s Revitalizing Crème, a non-greasy, ultra-light leave in conditioner. It will help strengthen your hairs natural elasticity, while also nourishing the scalp.
Whether you’re living the straight and narrow or headed straight for danger, Mane ‘n Tail will make sure your straight hair always shines!
